Little Mermaid posters! Halle Bailey stuns, Melissa McCarthy haunts, Flounder scares

Disney released new posters for The Little Mermaid this week in anticipation of the film’s May 26 release.

Bullet Halle Bailey looks sexy in the title role as the singing mermaid Ariel.

Melissa McCarthy haunts it as the evil Ursula who wreaks havoc on the bottom of the sea.

But fans weren’t too happy about Flounder, who looks very different from his cartoon character.

The Fish looks slimmer than its 1989 version and some would say a little “scary”.

Also seen are Sebastian, voiced by David Diggs, Skattle, voiced by Awkwafina, King Triton, starring Javier Bardem, and Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer King.

In the 1980s, the flounder was fully featured, if that can be called a fish, and is now much skinnier. Some joked on Twitter that Flounder visited a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills.

Actor Jacob Tremblay will voice Flounder.

Meanwhile, Rob Marshall, director of The Little Mermaid, praised McCarthy for bringing ‘depth’ to Ursula.

The director opened up about the decision to cast the “Bridesmaids” actress as the iconic sea witch who steals the voice from Ariel (Bailey) in the live-action reboot, and how “scary” it is to get the right person in the role, which was originally inspired by Drag Queen Divine game.

‘I love that it was originally inspired by Divine (Harris Glenn Milstead), an amazing drag actor, who was very original and funny,’ he told SFX magazine.

I thought, “Well, who would be able to bring humor and depth?”

Since this is now live action, he can’t just be a funny character, he has to have a great deal of depth.

Who can do that and sing – really sing – and bring authenticity? I wanted a woman with size, too, because I thought that was important.

Praising McCarthy as a “brilliant” performer even beyond her fame in comedy, Marshall returns to Ursula’s early inspiration for the original 1989 animated classic.

He added, “She’s a great actress. People forget about that.” They say, “Oh, it’s funny.”

This character is wounded, and manages to find all that depth and emotion, as well as all the other colors.

We really used Divine as our inspiration, because that’s where it started.

“But the thing about Divine is that she’s larger than life, and this character is larger than life, but at the same time, Melissa manages to bring humanity to her.”

McCarthy recently opened up about her character’s influence, describing her as “everything I want in a drag queen” and noting the “sadness” and “grittiness” along with the humor.

She added to Entertainment Weekly, “There’s a drag queen living inside of me.” I’m always about to go with her full time.
