Leslie Van Houten, a former Charles Manson follower, was freed from a California prison on Tuesday, marking the end of her 53-year sentence for her involvement in two notorious murders.
According to the California Department of Corrections, Van Houten has been placed under parole supervision following her release.
This development follows Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent decision not to challenge a state appeals court ruling that granted Van Houten parole. Now in her 70s, she had been serving a life sentence for her role in the 1969 killings of Leno LaBianca, a grocer from Los Angeles, and his wife, Rosemary.
Van Houten was released from prison during the early hours of the morning and was transported to transitional housing.
