NNA – More than 80 million Americans woke up Sunday to heat warnings or recommendations across the western and southern states, where temperatures topped record levels.
The National Meteorological Authority warned of a quot;widespread and severe heat wavequot; in a large part of the west and south of the country, with temperatures expected to continue to rise in the next week, increasing health risks for millions of residents.
quot;Record-wide high temperatures are expected, as well as record-breaking daily low temperatures, in parts of the southwest, along the western Gulf Coast, and in southern Florida, quot; the agency said in a report Sunday morning.
The city#39;s residents were asked to limit the use of electricity from two in the afternoon until ten in the evening, from Saturday to Monday, in an attempt to mitigate the high demand.
In turn, residents of Southern California witnessed temperatures ranging from a peak of 41-43 degrees Celsius on Saturday, and they are preparing for a second day of heat, as Sunday temperatures are expected to reach 46 degrees in parts of California, Nevada and Arizona, according to the Meteorological Authority.
The National Weather Service said heat is the leading cause of weather-related death in the United States and urged Americans to take these risks seriously.
The authorities sounded the alarm a few days ago, recommending that Americans avoid outdoor activities during the day and avoid dehydration, which can quickly become fatal in this heat.
Heat waves recurred faster and more intensely in major US cities, at a rate of six times annually during the first two decades of this century, compared to two waves annually during the 1960s, according to the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.
