Still-Missing Alaska Kayaker Inadvertently Filmed Own Drowning With GoPro
An Alaska man, identified as 43-year-old Paul Rodriguez Jr., recorded his own drowning on a glacial lake using a GoPro camera mounted on his helmet, officials say.
Although authorities have recovered the camera, they have not yet located his body. The incident occurred on July 11 when Rodriguez’s kayak overturned due to a strong current originating from the glacier.
Alaska State Troopers, along with search teams, have been searching Mendenhall Lake to find Rodriguez’s body. The discovery of his helmet with the attached camera, found on the lakeshore and later turned in to troopers, recorded the unfortunate accident, Troopers said
The investigation into Rodriguez’s disappearance began when Juneau police received a report from U.S. Forest Service employees about a vehicle that had been parked at the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area since July 11, registered to Rodriguez. His last known whereabouts were on July 10, as reported by his roommate. Additionally, friends noted a social media post by Rodriguez on July 11, which showed a kayak on a beach near Nugget Falls, an area within the recreation area and along the lake.
On July 11, a kayak resembling the one from Rodriguez’s post was found floating unattended on the lake, prompting the authorities to initiate a search operation. Despite their efforts, his body remains missing.
