NNA – Historical forest fires in Canada this year have emitted more than one billion tons of carbon dioxide, an unprecedented level, according to estimates by the Canadian authority, as reported by quot;Agence France-Pressequot;.

This is approximately equal to the annual emissions of Japan (equivalent to 1.12 billion tons of carbon dioxide in 2021), the fifth largest polluter in the world, and exceeds the annual emissions of the global aviation sector in 2022 (about 0.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide).

Preliminary estimates indicate that emissions for the current season have exceeded one billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalence and expectations are that the risk of fires will remain quot;higher than normalquot; until September.
