Barnaby Joyce has revealed he watched the wrong Matildas game at his local pub on Saturday night and missed the penalty shootout win over France.
Sam Kerr and her teammates achieved what no Australian team – male or female – had done before: secure a place in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup.
Beating France on penalties 7-6 after a thrilling 120 minutes and the longest shootout in Cup history, the Matildas now turn to the Lionesses of England on Wednesday.
The quarterfinal is the highest rated sports TV program since Cathy Freeman’s victory in the 2000 Olympics – and Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce missed it all.
Speaking to Seven’s Sunrise on Monday morning, the National Party politician revealed they had the wrong Matildas game in the campaign pub he was attending – and no one realized the mistake.
Joyce missed the thrilling penalty shootout that saw Australia through to the semi-finals (pictured, Matildas players celebrate victory)
“I went to the pub to watch it at the weekend,” he said.
“And you will see it on the Facebook post – I think we were watching the wrong game.
“I think they put on a repeat, because it was on Channel Ten.
“I don’t think it was the right one because at the end of the game Australia had won 1 – 0 at the end of the game.
“So we were like, that’s fine – we still won.”
The fact that the game he saw featured the Channel Ten watermark – and the result was a 1-0 win over Australia – means the pub replayed the Matildas’ win over Les Bleues in their game preparation for the World Cup on July 14.
Joyce also criticized the plan to give Australians a public holiday if the Matildas won the tournament and questioned why Australians should have time off to celebrate the national team and not the other teams.
“I think that’s a very good reason for the Matildas to have the day off. But listen, why didn’t we have the day off after the Diamonds won[the Netball World Cup]? he said.
Joyce watched a replay of Australia’s friendly with France on July 14 – and came away thinking the Australians had won their World Cup quarter-final 1-0
Joyce believes the Aussies shouldn’t have the day off if the Matildas (pictured celebrating victory over Les Bleues) win the tournament
“I mean they would have just put in as much effort as anybody else. When we’re good at the Olympics, will we have a rest day after that?
“We just have to be very careful, it takes days off, because eventually someone pays. I mean, this is not a case where it’s free.
“Somebody has to pay and it’s overwhelmingly small businesses. What if I asked you, “Do you want to pay for your co-workers to have a day off?” you would probably say no.
The Matildas take on England on Wednesday night in Sydney, with the winner facing either Spain or Sweden in the final next Sunday.
