As the Matildas prepare for their epic semi-final against the England Lionesses, eagle-eyed fans highlighted an emotional part of the players’ celebrations against France involving Ellie Carpenter.
The Matildas prevailed in a penalty shootout against the Blues with goalkeeper MacKenzie Arnold the rock in the mouth of the goal that saved the day for the Australians.
As the players gathered to celebrate, fans highlighted the moment Carpenter saw Arnold come join in the fun with his teammates.
The defender immediately slipped out of the grip of her fellow Matildas and pointed at Arnold while shouting at the star of the game.

As the Matildas gathered to celebrate, Carpenter spotted Arnold rushing towards them and broke free.
She pointed to the goalkeeper who had saved the day for Australia with an expression that fans said represented every Matildas supporter at the time.
After the match, Carpenter gave a moving speech about what victory meant to all players.
“When I was little I was with a boys’ team. I didn’t have a women’s team,” said the defender.
“I think now if I was 12 at Stadium Australia and Suncorp (Brisbane Stadium), watching sold-out crowds, like how amazing it is for young girls and young boys to see that.

“How far we have come is simply unimaginable. I am so proud to be part of this generation, that what we have done has changed women’s sport in Australia, not just football but sport in general.
“Our job this World Cup was to inspire the next generation and to hear how many people watch our games, come to our games, have live venues across Australia – they show our game at four major stadiums – it’s just amazing.
“That’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to inspire the next generation and pave the way for women’s football in Australia.

Arnold is still coming to terms with the thrill of victory and what’s yet to come.
“I will remember that night for the rest of my life,” she said.
“I certainly didn’t treat it.
“It’s the craziest game I’ve ever played, considering what was at stake.”
“It’s going to take a long time to really realize what happened, what I did and what the team did. I’m just super proud to be Australian right now.
The Matildas keeper also revealed that she had some health issues before the game.
“I haven’t been very well for the past few weeks. So I’m still getting over it, hence the eyes – it’s not tears, yet it’s not tears.
“(But) you just have to do your job. I was always going to play.
