Police discovered a gruesome makeshift morgue where 34 butchered bodies were wrapped in plastic inside a Mexican drug cartel hideout.

Announcing the grim discovery, authorities said on Monday that the bodies had been piled into kitchen chest freezers.

Shocking images of the butchered remains show torsos wrapped in plastic piled on top of each other at the property in Poza Rica, in the Mexican state of Veracruz – an area wracked by drug-related violence.

Six suspects have been arrested, prosecutor Veronica Hernandez told reporters.

According to initial investigations, “unfortunately there could be more than 13 bodies”, she said, before more bodies were discovered.

Police and soldiers discovered the cold rooms after storming a cartel-controlled home in a shootout with gang members in the early hours of Sunday.

Inside they found 14 butchered torsos and a search of a second property revealed another freezing chamber with at least 20 remains of victims in cold storage.

According to some media, some captives – possibly awaiting execution – were freed alive by Mexican authorities.

It is well understood that Police had chased a suspect who hid in the building where three kidnapping victims were being held, officials told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Police then carried out operations in the area and found more remains in other locations, they said, seizing a vehicle, weapons and unspecified drugs.

Veracruz is one of the most violent regions in Mexico due to rival gangs fighting for control of lucrative drug trafficking routes to the United States.

The Latin American nation has recorded more than 400,000 murders since the launch of a controversial military offensive against drugs in 2006.

It has also recorded more than 110,000 disappearances since 1962, most attributed to criminal organizations.
