On Wednesday, North Korea officially announced that it is conducting an investigation regarding a U.S. soldier who crossed the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) into the country last month. State media reported that the soldier expressed a desire to find refuge either in North Korea or a third country due to feelings of ‘ill treatment and racial discrimination’ within the U.S. Army.
This statement marks the first time North Korea has confirmed the status of Pvt. Travis King. Pvt. King had crossed the military demarcation line into North Korea during a visit to the Joint Security Area in the DMZ on July 18.
According to a report from the North’s official Korean Central News Agency in English, “Travis King confessed that he had decided to come over to the DPRK as he harbored ill feeling against inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the U.S. Army.”
The report further stated, “He also expressed his willingness to seek refuge in the DPRK or a third country, saying that he was disillusioned with the unequal American society.”
