Their embrace on the pitch made headlines as Kerr’s rift with his former longtime partner – fellow USA club player Nikki Stanton – was yet to be made public.
After nearly two years into their high-profile romance, Kerr and Mewis have become one of football’s power couples and have made a decision to be “out and proud” in gay and straight communities.
Their romance around the world has also been widely documented on social media, with the two women amassing hundreds of thousands of followers.

Kerr revealed his biggest concern since entering into a relationship with Mewis.
“What worries me the most is that our coaches or teammates don’t think we can separate the two. I hope people know that when it comes to practice time or game time, that doesn’t matter,” Kerr said.
“I remember once in Newcastle (Australia) she came, we were playing against each other and we met. We would kill each other. But I’m afraid people think we don’t take our careers seriously.
“We played a game against each other but I thought his team was crazy. When I play, I’m like an agitator and she (Mewis) was getting so mad,” Kerr said.
