Cheems died aged 12 after falling asleep during cancer surgery, his owner has revealed.
The beloved meme dog didn’t wake up during the procedure on Friday afternoon, his Instagram page said.
The internet erupted in heartbreaking tributes to the adorable shiba inu, with some making memes of him entering paradise.
Cheems, who lived in Hong Kong, rose to fame online when a photo was posted of him in 2017 with a questioning look on his face.

The owners of Cheems wrote on Instagram on Friday: ‘Ball Ball fell asleep 18/8. He fell asleep Friday morning during his last thoracentesis operation.
“Originally we wanted to arrange chemotherapy or other possible treatment for him after this operation, but it’s too late now.
“Don’t be sad, remember the joy Balltze brought to the world. A Shiba Inu with a round, smiling face that connects you to me, he helped many people during the pandemic and brought a lot of joy to many of you, but now his mission is complete.
“I believe he runs freely in the sky and eats a lot of delicious food with his new friends.
“He will always be in my heart. I hope he can continue to bring joy to everyone in the online world, that’s my only humble request.

His owners also paid tribute to the medical staff who cared for him during his battle with cancer over the past six months.
They added: “All of you have been so generous and helpful, and I am truly grateful to you, your love and support for Ball Ball is so unconditional and I have found it to be the purest love in the world, having Ball Ball in my life is the best thing that ever happened.
They plan to send the donations that were sent for Cheems care and the brass pin money that was collected for medical bills will now be donated to local animal charities.
The post garnered over 540,000 likes from around the world, with many fans of the smiling dog expressing their condolences and sending messages of love to the Cheems family.
‘Thank you for all your love. Thanks Ball. We love you,” one person wrote.

Some even shared how Cheems helped them through some of the darkest days of the Covid-19 pandemic. One mourner wrote, “Rip cheems, but in all seriousness, cheems have actually kept me entertained and genuinely happy for most of quarantine.”
They added: “I never thought I would say I shed a tear for the death of a dog I never even met, but the cheese was really special.” I will miss him a lot but I’m glad he’s resting now.
