Tragedy spoiled the Spanish celebrations when it was revealed to striker Olga Carmona that her father had died ahead of the final.
Carmona’s father is believed to have died on Friday but the news was withheld from the 23-year-old so as not to affect her state of mind ahead of the England game.
The Spanish Football Association tweeted after the game: “We deeply regret to announce the death of Olga Carmona’s father. The footballer learned the sad news after the World Cup final. We love you, Olga, you are part of the history of Spanish football.
Carmona had celebrated his first-half goal with a message on his shirt for a friend whose mother had just died.
It was reminiscent of men’s player Andres Iniesta’s gesture towards his late friend Dani Jarque when he netted Spain’s winning goal in the men’s World Cup final in 2010.

Carmona, a left-back, was named Player of the Match and also scored a late winner in Spain’s semi-final victory over Sweden.
She celebrated her team’s success on the pitch with her teammates, dancing around Sydney Stadium.
In an interview, she said: “We felt that this team had something special”.
Spain celebrated their win in style on the pitch with Queen Letizia even stepping into the center of the team photo and lifting the trophy.
She was then given a Spanish shirt with a number 12 on the back and had to politely decline as the whole team chanted for her to put it on.
Protocol was forgotten as Spain became only the second nation, after Germany, to win both the men’s and women’s World Cups.
“We dedicate it to all our families and to the people of Spain,” said Jennifer Hermoso, who missed a penalty, “we played football the way we wanted and we won a world championship.”

Back in Spain, they had lined up two hours before kick-off outside the 6,000-capacity WiZink Center in Madrid, one of around 30 fan sites set up across the country to broadcast the final.
At 90 minutes there was a common sip when the fourth referee showed 13 minutes needed to be added, but once the final whistle sounded the euphoria eased.
“We got our revenge in the most important game,” Diario AS said, recalling how England knocked Spain out of the Euros in the quarter-finals a year ago.

Spain are due to return home to Madrid on Monday evening where they will take part directly in a parade of trophies in the Spanish capital.
However, their win and the celebrations that followed sparked controversy after Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales kissed striker Jenni Hermoso on the podium as the players collected their medals.
Rubiales threw his arms around Hermoso and gave him a big hug while whispering in his ear. He then placed both hands on the back of her head and kissed her on the lips.
Hermoso was asked about the hug after the match by Spanish TV channel La 1 and, looking somewhat uncomfortable, told them: “Eh…yeah, I didn’t appreciate that.”
She said the same when asked about a livestream on her Instagram from the Spanish dressing room.
Footage of the kiss has gone viral online since it went on air, with some fans heavily criticizing Rubiales’ behavior.

One furious fan said: “Rubiales’ behavior on that podium was absolutely sinister.” Very very inappropriate!’
Another added: “It’s just awful, there’s absolutely nothing to justify Rubiales’ behavior.”
Another angry individual highlighted his contempt for the attitude of a senior Spanish football official. They said: “The concerning fact here is the nonchalant way in which Rubiales behaves towards Hermoso. The FA chairman does it on the biggest stage in sport with royalty and officials by his side, surrounded by cameras. Very disturbing and frankly disturbing.
One person even insisted it was a worrying sign for the sport’s future, adding: “It’s sad to think women’s football won’t progress very far if men like Rubiales, Vilda and Infantino stay. in powerful positions.”
