Victoria could have its first female prime minister in more than three decades as Daniel Andrews heads for the door – but it’s not yet certain.
Labor MPs are meeting in Parliament to discuss appointing a new leader to replace Mr Andrews, who will finish his role at 5pm on Wednesday and relinquish his seat of Mulgrave.
Her deputy Jacinta Allan put her hand up for the top job, but it was revealed around midday that Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll was challenging Ms Allan.
Jacinta Allan, the woman favored to replace Daniel Andrews (second, right) as Victoria’s premier, was in charge of the state’s canceled Commonwealth Games bid.
Ms Allan told reporters as she entered Victoria’s Parliament House: “There is a caucus meeting this morning, I look forward to joining the caucus with my colleagues and letting the usual caucus process take its course .
Asked if she had the support of her Labor colleagues, Ms Allan said she would respect them and let the usual process take its course.
Ms Allan belongs to the socialist left faction, like Mr Andrews. Mr. Carroll belongs to the right-wing faction of the party.
If successful, Ms Allan would be the state’s first female premier since Joan Kirner resigned in 1992.
The rules state that leadership nominations must be open for three days, but it is unclear whether they will be respected if there is only one nomination.
Attorney General Jaclyn Symes, who belongs to the right-wing faction, told reporters she expected Ms Allan to run unopposed and believed a new prime minister would be chosen on Wednesday anyway .
Ms Symes also ruled herself out of running for MP and said she would wait until she knew exactly who was running before supporting a candidate.
Treasurer Tim Pallas arrived in Parliament and did not rule out an election for MP.
“I am still in consultation with my colleagues on this and of course it is important to see who the leader is and that that person has the opportunity to choose the person they want to become deputy,” he said to journalists.
Mr Pallas said it was up to the caucus to determine whether the three days should be respected.
Former Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said if the Bendigo East MP had her way she would ensure all Victorians were represented on Spring Street.
“She’s an accomplished and very successful woman leader herself,” Mr Shorten told ABC Radio National.
“She comes from the regions, she is a very experienced politician.”
Mr Andrews announced his decision to step down at a press conference on Tuesday.
The outgoing prime minister has spoken about his thoughts on life after the top job, hinting he could work in the private sector after taking time off.
Mr Andrews became prime minister in November 2014, toppling a Liberal government in its first term, and led Labor to victories in 2018 and last year.
During the 2022 campaign and the months that followed, he repeatedly said he would stay for the full four-year term.
His change of heart is a recent decision, he said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told ABC Radio Melbourne on Wednesday that Mr Andrews had been a strong leader and a passionate Victorian.
