England captain Millie Bright has lamented the absence of VAR for last night’s Nations League defeat to the Netherlands, labeling it ‘baffling’.
The incident that sparked her comments took place in the build-up to the hosts’ first goal, with Danielle van de Donk receiving the ball in an offside position before attacking Lieke Martens to score.
The Netherlands then won the match 2-1.
Bright admits England should have defended the situation better, but called for more consistency in the use of technology in women’s football.
“It’s always frustrating (not to have VAR),” the 30-year-old said.

‘I think we want to make the level of the game as high and professional as possible, but still sometimes we have VAR and sometimes we don’t.
‘There’s no consistency. But that is by no means an excuse.
“We put ourselves in that position: we didn’t clear the ball, we didn’t escape the pressure.
‘But it is also the differences in matches and it is a real shame that these are still huge decisions that are wrong.
‘This is international football and we don’t have VAR in a competitive international game, which is mind-boggling.’
The use of VAR is at the discretion of the host nation until the semi-final of the Women’s Nations League.
Galgenwaard Stadium, home of Eredivisie side Utrecht, is equipped with the infrastructure for VAR as it has been used in the Dutch top flight since the 2018/19 season.
There was also no VAR available for England’s win against Scotland last Friday at the Stadium of Light, home of Championship side Sunderland.
That was because the ground is not equipped for the technology as VAR is not used in the English second tier.
