A French museum has taken corrective action on a waxwork of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in response to his expressed concerns. Earlier this month, the Grevin Museum in Paris unveiled a life-sized figure of the wrestler-turned-actor, which received a significant amount of criticism. One of the main points of contention was the model’s skin tone, with fans accusing the creators of ‘whitewashing’ the star, who has a dual heritage.
Following The Rock’s participation in the criticism, museum officials pledged to ‘revise’ the wax figure. The actor called on them to make updates, particularly addressing his skin color. Subsequently, the Grevin Museum acknowledged the validity of The Rock’s comments and announced that their staff had worked overnight to ‘correct the skin tone’ of the wax figure.
Initially, museum director Yves Delhommeau attributed the skin tone issue to a ‘lighting problem’ and confirmed that it would be resolved. He also mentioned that The Rock was expected to visit the museum later to consider any additional modifications.
The museum introduced the wax figure in Paris on October 16th and explained that the artist, Stéphane Barret, had to rely on photographs and videos to craft the sculpture. According to a press release, the meticulous work involved reworking the model’s eyes on three separate occasions.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was born in California to a father of Black Nova Scotian descent and a Samoan mother. His father, Wayde Douglas Bowles, was a wrestler known as Rocky Johnson and was part of the first Black tag team to win a WWE championship.
