Archaeologists have discovered that a woman buried next to her husband more than 1,000 years ago had a hollowed-out head.
The female skeleton, which measured just over 5 feet tall, was found lying on her back next to her husband’s skeleton, with her facial bones missing.

Archaeologists told German newspaper Bild it was likely the husband was a dignitary.
“Among other things, they found on him a knife, a set of belts and accessories for a so-called official staff, like those carried by generals. This is considered a dignitary accessory,” said archaeologist Felix Biermann from the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology.
But the scientific team said the woman was buried in an unusual manner without any belongings.
Biermann said she may have deliberately wished not to be buried with any belongings.
“The fact that there is nothing with her is very unusual. Maybe she was already Christian, but the man was even more traditional. In Christianity, these kinds of additions were avoided.
The couple’s bones are currently being examined in the laboratory to determine how they died.
In 2020, German researchers discovered the 4,500-year-old remains of a woman, buried in a simple but “love” tomb.
The discovery was made by Philipp Roskoschinski and a team of archaeologists from the company Archaeros during excavations in Uckermark, a rural county located about 60 miles northeast of Berlin.
Although the grave itself is humble, the posture and position of the woman indicate a possible connection to other ancient burial practices seen as far away as Scotland.
