The “QAnon Shaman,” who gained notoriety for his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot, has announced his candidacy for Congress. Jacob Chansley has formally submitted documents to run as a libertarian in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.

Infamous for donning a horned fur hat and red, white, and blue face paint while seated in the Senate chamber during the Jan. 6 riot, Chansley later pleaded guilty to a felony charge of obstructing an official proceeding related to the Capitol assault. In November 2021, he received a 41-month prison sentence and was subsequently released to a halfway house in March. Despite previously identifying as the “QAnon Shaman,” Chansley has distanced himself from the QAnon movement.

While federal law doesn’t prohibit felons from holding federal office, Arizona state law restricts felons from voting until they have served their complete sentence.
