Woman reveals bizarre medical condition that means she was born without a vagina: ‘I bring it up on the first date’

A woman has revealed how she discovered she was born without a vaginal opening.

Sydney Bean, 24, from Idaho, told KIIS FM’s The Kyle and Jackie O show on Monday that she discovered she had a microperforated hymen – where the hymen covers almost the entire opening of your vagina – after trying to use a tampon.

“It’s not as obvious as you might expect, especially when you’re a baby,” Sydney told presenters Kyle Sandilands or Jackie O Henderson.

Sydney said she had a hymenectomy, a surgical procedure to open or remove the hymen.

‘I had surgery when I was seventeen. It was extremely painful. It took me about a week to recover,” she explained.

Kyle then asked Sydney about her love life, adding, “Did they comment on that if you found love later in life?”

“They wouldn’t notice unless I say something, but I always say something,” she said.

“I bring it up on the first date… It’s a funny story and I like to be very honest about my body.”

She continued, “I’m intersex and there are other things about my body that are neither male nor female.”

Sydney said she has elevated levels of androgens, which are commonly thought of as male hormones, although small amounts are also produced in the female body.

Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a person born with sex organs, chromosomes, or reproductive organs that do not fit into the male/female sex binary.

It comes after Sydney recently recalled how it took her years to realize there was a community of people with anatomical differences like hers in an episode of the Truly series. Born different.

‘Life has changed so much since I started identifying as intersex. “I’m much happier with myself because I can understand why my body is the way it is,” she said.

‘I wish people would understand that it is not bizarre to be intersex. Biological gender is not binary. It exists on a spectrum.”
