Protesters dressed in replica hazmat suits were thrown out of the NSW Liberal Conference on Saturday after heckling Opposition Leader Peter Dutton over his stance on nuclear power.
Liberal Party members and supporters watched as a group of men entered the conference hall in Sydney, claiming to be Mr Dutton.
A video uploaded to the South Coast Labor Council Facebook page showed two men dressed in full white suits with radiation risk symbols and signs reading “Dutton MP for Fukushima” and “Nukes ‘R’ Us” .
“We have a special announcement from the leader of the opposition, Fukushima MP Peter Dutton,” one protester said of the disruptions.
Protesters were escorted from the NSW Liberal Party conference at the Fullerton Hotel in Sydney on Saturday after turning up in hazmat suits and pretending to be Peter Dutton.
Both men were quickly kicked out of the event chanting “Nukes ‘R’ Us, Nukes ‘R’ Us” after declaring their support for nuclear power and opposition to a cease-fire in the Israeli conflict -Palestinian.
Disgruntled members off-camera could be heard shouting “s*** off” at the group of men as they continued their performance.
“I’m sorry we didn’t support Save the Whales before, but we’re going to save the whales from those damn wind farms down there,” said a protester posing as Mr Dutton.
The men spent a few minutes declaring their support for nuclear power and opposition to a cease-fire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict before being escorted out of the conference chanting “Nukes ‘R’ Us, Nukes ‘R’ Us.”
Following the protest, Mr Dutton took to the podium to outline his plans to “start a conversation” about nuclear energy in Australia.
He said most Australians did not understand the basics of nuclear power, which he said could greatly benefit Australia if implemented correctly.
“Most people were influenced by the impact of Chernobyl and indeed some people participating in the research were influenced by The Simpsons,” the opposition leader said.
“If you watched The Simpsons, some research showed that people didn’t want a Springfield in their backyard.”
Mr Dutton criticized the government’s recent energy plans, saying the Australian taxpayer will be “on the hook for years” due to mismanagement.
Following the protest, Mr Dutton took to the podium to outline his plans to “start a conversation” about nuclear energy in Australia.
Some members of the audience of 600 booed Michelle Bishop, a member of the New South Wales state Liberal executive, earlier when she attempted to recognize the traditional owners of the land.
Earlier in the conference, tensions appeared to persist following the recent Voice referendum, when Michelle Bishop, a member of the New South Wales state Liberal executive, was booed while acknowledging traditional owners lands.
Ms Bishop addressed the crowd of 600 at the Fullerton Hotel where she acknowledged “that we are on the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation and we recognize our traditional owners”.
Audience members began to mock Ms. Bishop as she nervously stammered through her short speech.
One member said it was only a small group of the crowd that was behind the boos and not everyone participated.
