Gary Neville has claimed Liverpool are ‘not title contenders’ and that Jurgen Klopp’s side will fall away with ‘the pretenders’ over the next four months.
The Reds take on Man City in a huge match at the Etihad Stadium today as Liverpool aim to top the Premier League.
Klopp’s men have had a fantastic start to the league this season, losing just once and winning eight.
Despite this, former Man United defender Neville has suggested Liverpool will not challenge for the title this season.
‘The pretenders will disappear over the next four months. “I don’t think we are looking at champions in Jurgen Klopp’s team, but we are looking at a team that could potentially become champions in the coming years,” he said.

Asked what he thought of Man City’s start to the season, he said: ‘I’m not surprised (by the hunger) because Pep Guardiola creates that at every club, but there are some bumps along the way.
‘I think after a Treble, being at the top of the league after 12 games, they will be very happy. “We’re not quite sure if it’s a good team to lose Gundogan and Mahrez, and we’re not sure yet if Doku is going to be sensational.”
Speaking about the absence of England defender John Stones, he added: ‘They don’t handle it very well because they don’t have the natural player to step in and it looks a bit awkward when others do.
‘That’s a problem for City. If Rico Lewis does it, they lose something physically. I like City when they have the big four defenders and Stones has to be one of them. Stones has flexibility in midfield.’
However, when discussing Neville’s comments about Liverpool, both Daniel Sturridge and Micah Richards disagreed.
Sturridge said: ‘I think this is going to be a long season for Liverpool to keep performing the way they are performing. I really think Liverpool can mount a title challenge.”

Richards reiterated the same: “They have only conceded ten goals this season. Van Dijk did excellently and is now back to his best.
‘But I still think Manchester City are the ones who, even without De Bruyne, losing Rodri, are over those humps. Liverpool, Arsenal, close behind.’
