Crocodile sightings in Queensland have reached record highs as debate over whether a cull should take place continues. There were more than 1,200 sightings of saltwater crocodiles in 2023, according to data from the state’s environment department. This eclipsed the previous record set two years earlier, which was 1,216 observations. The results are also a huge increase compared to a decade ago, when there were only 336 observations. Katter’s Australia Party has called for the killing of crocodiles in recent years, after a cafe owner was taken by one of the reptiles last year.
