<p>Queen Elizabeth II was Britain’s longest-ever reigning monarch, serving 70 years on the throne.</p>
<p>Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”</p>
<p>Elizabeth II’s oldest son, Prince Charles, became king immediately.</p>
