A reunion between Frankie Dettori and John Gosden is set to take place just over three weeks after it was announced their partnership was ending when Italian Emily Upjohn rides in the Irish Oaks on July 16.
In the wake of a disastrous Royal Ascot, including a poorly rated ride by Dettori on Stradivarius in the Gold Cup, Gosden announced that he and his stable jockey were taking a ‘sabbatical’.
Few believed that a break in the relationship was not permanent. But later comments from Gosden, who trains in partnership, made it clear that the trainer was frustrated with his head jockey’s lack of focus and the amount the 51-year-old drove, a part-timer compared to his main jockey rivals.

Seemingly another cause for tension was Dettori’s ride on Emily Upjohn at the Cazoo Oaks in Epsom when she slipped at the start and lost ground then went around the field only to be narrowly beaten on Tuesday.
Dettori rode with Emily Upjohn in practice at the Newmarket July course early Tuesday morning and Gosden said that would be repeated at the Irish Classic and hinted there is a way back for Dettori.
Gosden said, “The less we say about Epsom, the better. The job wasn’t a problem at Epsom, she didn’t mind the job at all. You just can’t go left and wipe the whole field. I don’t want to talk about it anymore because it’s over and over.

“Frankie has been working here. The plan is for him to ride her in the Irish Oaks, which is why he was here this morning.
“You know what it’s about. I need a jockey who focuses. It can’t be a part-time job.
“As noted at Wimbledon, Rafa Nadal trains the most and the hardest in the morning. That is the point and that is very clear.
“I said I’m happy with the way Frankie has gone through with it and is getting rides everywhere. It’s exactly what I wanted to see.

“He is quite proud of how few horses he has in a season. I’m very clear that we’ve been very careful with him for the past seven years, how we’ve managed it and the rides. He doesn’t have to run to the small tracks. Those days are over. We did that together in the 1990s, but I’m very clear that we need to be more focused and a little less part-time, that’s all.
“That’s the point and nothing else. That’s all I’m going to say.’
Gosden said no decision has been made as to who will ride the undefeated Inspiral in Friday’s Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.
Dettori will ride in America on Saturday for Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby.
