Talk about seeing potential.
Two renovation experts tell how they bought a run-down property with missing walls, rotting walls, and missing floorboards for just $6,500 and turned it into a stunning, livable space that they went on to sell for $410,000.
Kyle Dubay, 34, and Beau Shepherd, 32, of Detroit, run a furniture restoration company and told DailyMail.com they found the three-bedroom property in 2019 through a client.
Kyle explained, “He had us walking around in it because he was going to buy it and tear it down.” He wanted us to see what kinds of materials we could save for repurpose. We loved the house when we walked in with it.

She was in terrible shape, but we thought her bones were pretty good. So we asked him if it would be ok if we bought it and refurbished it.
And he obviously liked the idea of saving her. So we ended up buying it from the Detroit Land Bank Authority at auction.

For example, discarded church oak pews were used to build kitchen cabinets and refrigerator panels.
Meanwhile, floorboards from an old basketball have been installed in some rooms, and old science lab countertops from a local college have been given a new lease of life as a kitchen worktop.
One of their most unusual finds was a spiral staircase which came from one of their Instagram followers after they posted a request for one.

“Something we’re doing with our furniture designs, just on a larger scale.”

Kyle said that “these big renovations can really test your emotional stamina sometimes.”

One of the photos from their renovation project shows Kyle armed with a chainsaw and goggles as he tackles a jungle-like landscape.
He said the garden was so overgrown with plants that their dog couldn’t even enjoy the space.

Kyle said this is more than double what they originally intended, but the reality of the build is that “there’s always a new problem to fix”.
One of the most expensive rooms to alter was the kitchen, as the couple had to invest in new appliances.
After selling the property, Kyle and Bo say they now have their sights set on an industrial building that they plan to turn into a home.
‘It’s a property we’ve both admired for 10 years,’ Kyle concluded. We own it now, and plan to launch it in the next month or so.
These major renovations can sometimes test your emotional capacity. But we love doing them, and honestly, doing it with someone dear to you is way more than doing it on your own.
