A brutal triple homicide in one of Mexico City’s most desirable neighborhoods has rocked the country, which is expected to surpass 35,000 homicides by the end of 2022.
On Sunday, artist brothers Jorge, 34, and Andres Tirado, 27, were found dead with their hands and feet bound and taped over their eyes next to their elderly uncle, Jose Gonzalez, 76, in the basement of a townhouse in the Roma Norte neighborhood , a neighborhood made famous by the 2018 Oscar-winning film Roma.
Police also found Gonzalez’s wife, Margarita Ochoa, inside the house, unharmed but handcuffed. The causes of death have not been made public.
At the time of writing, authorities in Mexico have attributed the grisly murder to a property dispute. Friends said on social media that the brothers had been missing since December 16, the prosecutor’s office said.

The house was owned by an elderly aunt of the Tirado brothers who died in May 2022. The aunt’s nurse and her family lived on the ground floor of the house.
According to reports in Mexico, the nurse’s family had claimed to have inherited the home.
Roma Norte is one of Mexico City’s most fashionable and affluent neighborhoods and is popular with tourists from the United States.
The nurse is considered one of the prime suspects in the heinous crime. After the relative’s death, Jose Gonzalez and his wife, Margarita Ochoa, moved into the home, much to the chagrin of the nurse and her family.
During the dispute, Gonzalez and Ochoa asked Jorge and Andres to move into the house as well.
Ochoa, who was not injured in the attack, told authorities that her family suffered physical abuse and death threats from the nurse’s family. For TV reports that Ochoa was left alive to force her to sign the deed to the house.
In addition to the murders, the brothers were also robbed by the killers. Those arrested have so far been named by the prosecutor’s office as Blanca Hilda Abrego Barreto, 65, the woman’s nurse, her daughter, Sally Mechaella Arenas Abrego, and son-in-law, Azhuer Lara Garcia.
The trio lived in a ground floor apartment in the house, located at 115 Medellin Street. The residence was considered part of her salary.
The attorney general’s office said information from Azhuer showed that he was in contact with someone via text and discussed how to tie someone up.
Jorge Tirado was musician and manager of singer Augusto Bracho. The brothers were originally from Mazatlan, Sinaloa.

An aspiring actor and graduate of the Autonomous University of Mexico, Andres had recently appeared in Sergio Mangana’s musical Frozen Income and the play King Kong Cabaret.
On his last publicly visible Facebook page, Andres wrote: “Stop generalizing the problem of violence. No problem in the history of the world has been solved by generalizations and will not be solved.’
He added: “The generalization of ‘it’s good people against bad people’ is like trying to cure all cancers with paracetamol.”
Silvana Estrada, winner of the Latin Grammy Award Best New Artist, mourned the brothers on Instagram. Local reports have described her as “close to” Jorge Tirado.
Estrada wrote, “I love you, Jorge.”
She continued, “You were my brother, my friend and my family. I am honored to know that we have built a friendship so strong that even now I still embrace your love.
Estrada added, “I will honor the miracle of your life Jorge, the miracle that you were a part of it, the miracle that your brother also became my brother, and that this sick, miserable and unforgiving world was bright and beautiful because of You . Nothing will ever be the same without you.’
Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum also expressed her dismay at the killings. Describes it as a ‘painful murder’ on Twitter. Sheinbaum is a potential candidate for the presidency of Mexico and with her campaign to be based on the capital’s low crime rate.
He also appeared in the movies, Pena de Lobos and Besos Negors. A vigil for the friars will be held at Roma Norte in the Sister Cities Park at 11am on Christmas Day.
The discovery of the bodies was made when another member of the family went to the house after not hearing from Jorge and Andres. Blanca’s family refused him entry. The family member then filed a complaint with the police, who launched an investigation.
La Verdad reports that the suspects were watching TV and drinking coffee when the police first knocked on their door. They originally claimed to know nothing about the missing family.
The group was first considered witnesses to the family’s disappearance, authorities say their stories quickly fell apart.
Another person, named only Rebeca, has also been arrested in connection with the crime and is accused of taking money from the deceased’s accounts. Authorities say Rebeca was taking part in a drug deal when she was arrested.
In addition to the brother’s debit cards, Rebeca also turned out to be in possession of a pawnshop ticket for a laptop owned by Andres.
Blanca’s grandson, Randy, and another woman named Hilda are also arrested for a role in the crime.
Among those mourning the brothers was the host of the Mexican version of Master Chef Celebrity, Betty Vazquez, who asked for prayers for the Tirado family, adding, “Another family plunged in pain.”
While actor Eduardo Espana tweeted that he was “shocked,” noting that Mexico is seeing “more and more cases.”
Despite Mexico City’s relatively low murder rate, more than 3,000 people are believed to be missing in the Mexican capital. More than 100,000 people are missing nationwide.
Mexico City authorities say 2022 will see the city’s lowest homicide rate since 2007.
