Richard Keys criticizes Steven Gerrard and tells him to stay away from Liverpool

Richard Keyes has asked Steven Gerrard to move away from Liverpool if he still hopes to run the Premier League.

The Reds icon wore the number 8 shirt again as Liverpool Legends beat Celtic 2-0 in a charity game on Friday.

Gerrard scored the first goal of the game from the penalty spot, then taunted Celtic fans who threw bottles and coins at the former Rangers boss.

The 42-year-old has been out of a job since being sacked by Aston Villa in October and former Sky Sports host Keys believes he needs a move away from the Reds if he still hopes to train in the Premier League.

Gerrard needs to distance himself from Liverpool for a few more years. One of his biggest problems at Villa was that their fans largely saw him as the captain of Liverpool.

“It was good to start with – Gerrard said all the right things. But as time went on and things weren’t going so well, he was easily beaten – even though he spent those two years at Rangers too.

Gerrard sent Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc the wrong way during the charity game after Martin Skrtel went down in the penalty area.

He happily celebrated in front of the Celtic fans who vented their feelings for the former manager of their cross-city rivals – as one fan appeared to throw his green and white shirt in his direction.

Keys criticized Gerrard, saying that even if he received a baton from Celtics fans beforehand, he’s a “big boy” and should know it’s part of the job.

‘He may have given up thinking he has a coaching career,’ he wrote, ‘but if he doesn’t, I firmly believe he should certainly give up on those matches. Either way – he shouldn’t be taunting the Celtic fans like he did after scoring.

“I know it’s tough and I know they kept it up the whole game – but he’s a big boy and he knows it’s all part of the party.

These fans have paid their money to charity (the players always get paid) and so they had the right to participate in the event.

During Gerrard’s time at Rangers, he led them to the Scottish Premier League title in 2021, ending years of Celtic dominance.

Since leaving Aston Villa, he has been regularly seen as an analyst or linked with Liverpool making 500 appearances between 1998 and 2015.

Gerrard’s love for Liverpool is as evident as ever, and he recently worked with the club’s channel to interview current star Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool Legends went 2-0 up shortly after the break against Celtic Legends when Chilean Marc Gonzalez doubled the hosts’ advantage at Anfield, and so the score remained.

The LFC Charity Match was held to raise money for the Foundation and its partner charities, funding programs across schools, inclusive sports, social work, health, wellbeing and food poverty.
