A reporter covering the Nashville massacre revealed live that she survived a school shooting in 2010

A news reporter broadcast live from the scene of the Nashville elementary school massacre reveals she is the survivor of a school shooting.

Joelyn Bokovac was reporting at the scene from Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, after transgender Audrey Hill, 28, shot and killed three children and three adults on Monday.

While bringing viewers of WSMV 4 an update about the school shooting, Bukovac revealed that she was in fact a victim herself — and the traumatic ordeal brought back memories that “flooded back.”

She was in eighth grade at Discovery Middle School in Madison, Alabama, on February 5, 2010 when shots were fired in the hallway of her school – killing one of her classmates.

“This is something that hits me close to home,” Bokovac said while on the air. I am actually a school shooting survivor. I was in middle school. This brings up a lot of difficult memories I went through.

Maintaining her composure, she continued advising the parents of these children about what to do next — acknowledging that it took her about two years to fully open up to her own school shooting experience.

Bukovac was subsequently tipped off, not just by her co-workers, but by a large group of online viewers for her professionalism and composure during what had to be a difficult broadcast.

In the 2010 Discovery Middle School shooting, Todd Brown, 14, was shot and killed by 15-year-old Hammad Memon.

“The shock they will feel will be incomprehensible,” Bokovac added.

I was in the hallway when the gunman shot at my school, I was in eighth grade at the time. I really wasn’t ready to talk about it for two years.

I hid under the risers in my choir class and those minutes and hours of waiting to be released by police officers felt like my age. So I know exactly what some of these kids are going through today.

“I’m a mom now, so I’m trying to put myself in those shoes.”

The reporter wrote on Twitter after it was broadcast, “I really appreciate all the support I received after sharing my story.

I don’t talk about it much, but I think about what happened on February 5, 2010 a lot. I just want people to know that they are not alone. I also want to discuss solutions. As a mother, I worry about the future.

The six victims of Monday’s Al-Ahed school shooting have been identified.

They were nine-year-olds, Evelyn Dickow, Haley Scruggs and William Kenny, three members of staff Cynthia Beck and Mike Hill, 61, and headteacher Dr Catherine Consey, 60.

Hill went to Covenant School at around 10.13am, opened fire and was killed by police less than 15 minutes later.

After the killings, parents rushed to the school to see if their children were safe and tearfully hugged their children, and a distraught community held vigils for the victims.

It is not clear what Hill’s motive was, but police believe she attended the school at some point. Police said they had drawn detailed maps of the school and were monitoring it.

Police said Hill left behind a statement that they believe will give them a motive for the massacre, the 129th in the United States in 2023.
