Former President Donald Trump could face several years in prison if he is found guilty of any charges brought against him in a landmark indictment in New York.
The 45th president’s legal troubles have been simmering for several years, with another legal investigation still ongoing in Georgia as well as a potential federal investigation.
If Trump, 76, is imprisoned over allegations that he paid off porn star Stormy Daniels, he will likely end up in Rikers Island – which houses some of the city’s most notorious criminals.
Mike Lawlor, an assistant professor of criminal justice at the University of New Haven, told DailyMail.com that Trump is more likely to end up at the notorious facility depending on where his trial is heard.
Trump will be given no-frills treatment — similar to that of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein — and forced to don his second-hand orange boiler suit.
The 45th president’s legal troubles have been mounting for several years, with another legal investigation still ongoing in Georgia as well as a potential federal investigation.
But if he is convicted and sentenced to prison, it is hoped that the former president and 2024 will find himself in a one-man cell in Rikers, Queens.
As an ex-president who recently announced his 2024 campaign, Trump has been granted lifetime protection by the Secret Service and will have two members of the agency sitting outside his 10-by-7-foot cell.
“Depending on the length of the sentence, if it’s relatively short, less than a few years, he’ll serve it on Rikers Island in New York,” Lawlor, who chaired the House Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2011, told DailyMail.com.
If the sentence is longer, it will be in an upstate correctional facility. But it is worth noting that Alan Weisselberg is currently imprisoned in Rikers.
Like Trump, he is older, and Trump will have to be in protective custody and isolated. They have facilities for that at Rikers, half of which are empty, so there’s no shortage of space.
Due to his age, he could also end up in the infirmary facility as he may have a variety of health issues and we are sure he has some.
It’s not complicated to happen, but it’s exciting. It will be relatively easy to achieve.
Trump will have protective custody and will likely have the 1-1 status which is usually reserved for suicidal prisoners.
He would have one or two Secret Service personnel sitting outside his cell with the corrections officers.
The 400-acre island in the East River, connected by a bridge to the town of Queens, is home to nine prisons.
Lawlor, who chaired the House Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2011, told DailyMail.com that Rikers was the prison most likely Trump would be sent to.
Trump will be given no-frills treatment — similar to that of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein — and forced to don a second-hand orange boiler suit.
That’s what the Secret Service does anyway, just in a different location. I’m sure there will be a check on who has access to it and who entered or exited that particular unit.
There will be no special treatment or privilege for an ex-politician. He’s like everyone else, he’ll get strip-searched, he’ll have an uncomfortable prison uniform bed, and if and when he’s incarcerated he’ll have to deal with it.
I don’t think they will exclude him. He’s the one who said in front of a group of cops don’t be so nice to these guys when you arrest them.
Former Trump chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, 75, is currently spending five months at Rikers — and spending his time in the infirmary due to his age and medical conditions.
It’s something experts say should be considered for Trump – who is three years older than Weisselberg.
However, if a case were to be brought within the federal system, Lawlor says it would be “easy” to move the former president to a different facility — adding that he would likely spend time in Otisville.

The federal facility is where Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, spent time after being convicted of campaign finance violations as part of a scheme to pay hush money to Stormy Daniels and another woman.
“Trump is being charged with the same thing Cohen was convicted of, and if he’s not at Rikers, he could be put in a federal facility,” Lawlor said.
Probably the same as Cohen’s, there are a lot of ways to imprison very high-profile people. El Chapo, or 9/11 terrorists, Unabomber, Son of Sam – there are a lot of people who have had to be put in protective custody have been imprisoned.
It is nothing new for correctional facilities to do this. This will be the final version but it is not unusual.
Assassination threats are what the Secret Service thinks about all the time, it’s a job for life. The conviction may come a few years from now, and Trump will likely resume being Trump at every possible point.
Rikers is New York’s most notorious prison, having held notable inmates like Tupac Shakur and the man who shot and killed Beatle John Lennon – Mark David Chapman

But if the appeals process is exhausted, I’m not sure Trump’s life expectancy will warrant being locked up in a jail cell — he’ll likely be in the infirmary already pushing 80 now.
There will be no golf or tennis for Trump, if he is in protective custody he will be allowed out but in a crate for his own safety.
The upper part will be open, but he will not be able to interact with anyone except corrections personnel. He’s in my league by himself, and snipers and their equivalents must be taken into consideration.
A Bureau of Prisons spokesperson added that the classification of each prisoner is based on several factors.
They said, “Some of the factors include the level of security and supervision required by the inmate, any medical or software needs, segregation and security measures to ensure inmates are protected, and other considerations including proximity to where the individual is released.”

Another famous jailbird was David Berkowitz, better known as Son of Sam, a serial killer who fatally shot eight people in New York City in the summer of 1976.
Musician Sid Vicious, rappers Foxy Brown, DMX, and Lil Wayne have all also called the facility home over the years.

Lawyers and criminologists have been calling for the notorious prison to be closed for years, citing its age and remote location, which makes family visits difficult.
