The Super Mario Bros. movie crushes the competition with a worldwide record debut of $377 million at the box office

Illumination and Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $377 million in its worldwide box office debut since opening last Wednesday – making it the biggest animated film opening of all time ahead of Frozen 2 ($358 million) in 2019.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic’s $100 million-budget CG animated adventure movie based on the Nintendo video game franchise broke the record for the biggest worldwide video game adaptation opening after Warcraft ($210 million) in 2016 – according to deadline.

The Super Mario Bros. film – which grossed $146.3 million from 4,343 theaters in the US and Canada – also had the biggest worldwide opening of the entire year, higher Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($225.3 million).

Chad Stahelski’s $100 million R-rated action movie is loved by critics and audiences alike with a shared approval rating of 94% on Rotten tomatoes.

JW4 also features Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins, Clancy Brown, Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick.

Paramount Pictures’ Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves had a strong second week, landing in third place with $14.5 million from 3,856 theaters domestically, but it only made back $89.5 million worldwide from its original budget of $150 million.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley’s fantasy film PG-13 also scored well with critics (90%) and audiences (94%) on Rotten tomatoes.

D&D is a CG action comedy starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant.

Amazon Studios’ Air debuted at No. 4 with $14.4 million from 3,507 theaters domestically, only making back $20.2 million worldwide from its $90 million budget to date.

Ben Affleck’s fifth feature film, about the origins of NBA legend Michael Jordan’s Nike “Air Jordan” sneakers, boasts a 92% critics’ approval rating (out of 232 reviews) and a 98% audience rating. Rotten tomatoes.

Air stars Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker and Viola Davis.

Paramount Pictures’ Scream VI landed fifth with $3.31 million domestically from 2,286 theaters for a worldwide total of $158.4 million since opening on March 10.
