A mum has revealed her ‘secret weapon’ when it comes to cleaning her kettle.
Bridget, from Palmerston North in New Zealand, felt discouraged after watching her glass and stainless steel kettle slowly decay over time.
She was about to throw away the kitchen gadget when she came across a unique way to make sure the device sparkles in minutes.
A viral cleanup hack usually calls for boiling real lemons in a kettle with water, but Bridget only had expired lemon juice from Coles available.
She simply poured 60ml of lemon juice into the electric kettle and filled it halfway with water, then turned it on.

Dark, discolored lumps inside kettles are the result of hard water with a high concentration of calcium and magnesium – which can also cause limescale to form.
Limescale renders kettles useless and will require replacement, which is why it is essential to keep your kettles clean.
Bridget let the lime juice and water mixture sit until it cooled, then revealed sparkling results.
She shared her success on a popular Facebook group and was met with praise and enthusiasm.
“My kettle looked so dreadful and I remember seeing an article about cooking lemons. I didn’t have real lemons but I had some old expired lemon juice that I was going to throw away so I tried this.
I boiled it (about a quarter of the bottle) with the jug half full and let it sit and it turned out amazing!
Many shared similar activities and revealed equally flawless results.
“I always clean my kettle like this,” one mum wrote. “I don’t mind the slight lemon taste afterwards – adds a kick!”
“This is my favorite party thing – I’ve been using it for many years now,” wrote a second.
While others mentioned that they also use lemons for their microwave, oven, shower screens, etc.
