Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was told by the NHL not to wear a custom-made mask for the team’s Native American Heritage night, his agent said Friday.
Allan Walsh confirmed his client was told he could not wear the mask, even during warm-ups. The league prohibits players from wearing special jerseys, masks, stickers, decals or tape during theme nights.
The league initially banned players from using rainbow-colored tape on Pride nights, but reversed that decision after backlash from the hockey community.
Teams will not be allowed to dress players in themed jerseys for warmups this season, after a handful of players decided to opt out of Pride Night warmups with special jerseys last season.
As the Wild celebrated Native American Heritage night against Colorado on Friday, Fleury wanted to honor his wife, Veronique, a Native woman, with a specially designed mask.

Fleury has been threatened by the league with a ‘significant fine’ if he defies their orders
Walsh said Fleury offered to pay the fine he would receive and the NHL threatened to impose an “additional significant fine” on the organization.
It was not clear how much both fines would amount to. The Wild had no comment, while a message to the NHL about the situation was not immediately returned.
Fleury, 38, is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and won the 2021 Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender.
