NRL commentator Andrew Voss flirted with controversy again after the Matildas’ World Cup semi-final heartbreak on Wednesday night.

“Back to work,” the Fox Sports commentator posted on social media shortly after Australia’s 3-1 loss to England at Stadium Australia.

His message appeared to be a thinly veiled reference to calls for a holiday if the Matildas had won the World Cup on home soil.

Before the Matildas were kicked out of the tournament, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had argued the Aussies should be rewarded with a day off if they were victorious, but Voss criticized the idea on his SEN Breakfast show on Monday.

“I just think it’s (a holiday) so bad,” he told his listeners.

“No, I know that – and I’m serious about it. I thought about it and just thought it wasn’t right, that’s not how it worked.

“I know this is going to shock you, Brandy (former NRL great Greg Alexander). There are people who don’t really follow the sport.

“There are people who are not invested in Matildas.”

Earlier on the show, Voss said there had to be “more important things” to justify a national holiday and called the idea “BS” and “ridiculous”.

Albanese eventually dropped plans to propose a national cabinet holiday if the Matildas won the World Cup.

South Australian Prime Minister Peter Malinauskas had repeatedly warned that he did not want to jinx the team ahead of Wednesday night’s clash.

Speaking to ABC National Radio, the state’s Labor leader said he would rather invest the $18million holiday prize money in women’s sports facilities.
